The Daily
The Daily is a news podcast from The New York Times, hosted by Michael Barbaro, which began in 2017. The show started on January 30, 2017, growing out of political audio coverage during the 2016 United States presidential election.
Episodes run between 20 and 30 minutes, structuring each release around one or two primary news stories drawn from reporting at The New York Times. Michael Barbaro interviews reporters to examine the background of major events, concluding with a brief summary of other headlines. American Public Media partnered with the newspaper in 2018 to distribute the podcast to public radio stations across the United States. Sabrina Tavernise joined the podcast as a regular co-host in March 2022, sharing hosting duties on alternating episodes.
Listeners downloaded the podcast 100 million times by August 2017, seven months after its debut. Audience numbers reached 2 million daily downloads by 2019 and 4 million daily downloads by 2020. Television network FX and streaming platform Hulu premiered The Weekly in June 2019 as a documentary adaptation of the podcast. The podcast received an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award in 2019. Jurors for the Peabody Awards honored the show in 2020 with an award for public service journalism. The Webby Awards also named it Best News and Politics Podcast in 2018.
Live presentations of the podcast took place in cities such as New York, Washington, and San Francisco during 2018 and 2019. Editorial scrutiny arose in late 2020 after The New York Times returned a Peabody Award won by Caliphate, a related audio series released in 2018. Objections focused on reporting flaws in that series as well as private messages sent by Michael Barbaro to journalists who critiqued the project. Barbaro delivered a statement on the podcast in January 2021 to address those interactions. Weekend episodes began appearing in 2024 to provide extended discussions on national affairs.
