Stuff You Should Know
Stuff You Should Know is an educational podcast hosted by Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant that began in 2008. The project started at the website HowStuffWorks in Atlanta, Georgia, where both hosts worked as senior staff writers.
Discovery Communications owned the parent website when recordings started in April 2008. The network operated under Stuff Media until iHeartMedia bought that company for $55 million in 2018. The podcast passed 500 million downloads on Apple Podcasts in September 2018, and reached 1 billion total downloads in 2019. Listeners voted the show a Webby Award winner for People's Voice in 2014 and 2016. The podcast also received nominations for Podcast of the Year at the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Episodes focus on explaining specific topics drawn from history, science, crime, and popular culture. Full episodes average 45 to 60 minutes in length and end with a recurring segment called Listener Mail, where the hosts read messages and corrections sent by the audience. In 2018, the show added Short Stuff episodes, which explain smaller subjects in about 15 minutes. Weekend releases under the title SYSK Selects feature older recordings from the archive. Notable episodes have covered subjects such as the 1971 D. B. Cooper airplane hijacking, the construction of the Berlin Wall, and the Donner Party.
Science Channel adapted the concept into a 10-episode television series that aired in January 2013, combining documentary segments with fictional storylines. Flatiron Books published a companion book titled Stuff You Should Know: An Incomplete Compendium of Mostly Interesting Things in October 2020. The book reached The New York Times Best Seller list in November 2020. The hosts also staged ticketed theater performances across North America and the United Kingdom, including appearances at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco and the Neptune Theatre in Seattle.
