The Howard Stern Show

The Howard Stern Show is an American radio talk program hosted by Howard Stern that originated in 1979. The production features celebrity interviews, comedic studio skits, and frank discussions on personal and social topics.

Stern developed the morning talk format at radio station WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut, during 1979 before moving to WWWW in Detroit in 1980. Co-host Robin Quivers joined the broadcast at WWDC in Washington in 1981, and producer Gary Dell'Abate joined in 1984. The program moved to WXRK in New York City in November 1985 and entered national syndication in 1986. Syndication grew across 60 regional markets in the United States and Canada, reaching an estimated peak audience of 20 million listeners. In January 2006, the broadcast shifted from terrestrial radio to satellite service Sirius Satellite Radio.

The Federal Communications Commission levied fines totaling $2.5 million against station owners carrying the program between 1990 and 2004 for material deemed indecent. Uncensored satellite broadcasts began on Sirius channels Howard 100 and Howard 101 after Stern signed an initial five-year agreement valued at $500 million in October 2004. Studio segments include extended interviews with musicians, politicians, and actors, including actor Ben Stiller. A televised edition of program highlights aired on cable network E! between 1994 and 2005, followed by the on-demand service Howard TV between 2006 and 2013.

Stern documented the history of the show in his autobiographical book Private Parts, published by Simon and Schuster in October 1993, which inspired a 1997 biographical film that grossed $41 million at the box office. Simon and Schuster also published his interview collection Howard Stern Comes Again in May 2019. SiriusXM renewed broadcast contracts with Stern in December 2010, December 2015, and December 2020. The National Radio Hall of Fame inducted Stern into its roster in November 2012. Audio archives and video clips stream across the SiriusXM digital application.
